From audiobooks to ancestors, car repair to career options, the funded e-resources available to public libraries in Ontario cover a wide range of topics and interests.  They appeal to a broad audience, from kids to academic researchers and, best of all, this information comes from well-established and trusted online publishers. E-resources come in a number of formats (audiobooks, e-books, databases) and can contain different types of publications within them.

Career Cruising

Available in-library or at home (with a valid library ID).  Career Cruising is brought to you by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport through the Southern Ontario Library Service and Ontario Library Service-North.


A fully bilingual database designed to help students and others plan their future.  Access hundreds of detailed occupation profiles--everything from Actuary to Zookeeper. Profiles include: job descriptions, working conditions, education and training, earnings, and links to related occupations and other resources. It also provides a national database of post-secondary schools which includes detailed information on colleges, universities and other training opportunities.


EBSCO Publishing

Available in-library or at home with a valid library ID).  These EBSCO products are brought to you by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport through the Southern Ontario Library Service and Ontario Library Service-North.

Canadian Points of View Reference Centre™ is a full-text database designed to provide students with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue. The database provides information on 100 key topics of interest to Canadian researchers, each with an overview (objective background/description, point (argument), counterpoint (opposing argument), and Critical Thinking Guide.

Consumer Health Complete is a comprehensive resource for consumer-oriented health content. It is designed to support the information needs of patients, and to foster an overall understanding of health-related topics.
Multilingual Health Database (French) provides translated full-text articles about common medical conditions and procedures in an easy-to-understand manner. These multilingual health database articles include full color illustrations, and links to the English version for easy reference.

NoveList is an readers’ advisory service that helps librarians and readers find fiction books based on books they have read or topics in which they are interested. Readers can search for books by title, author or by simply describing a book they would like to read.

NoveList K-8 contains enhanced subject access for over 70,000 fiction titles aimed at the K-8 population. Full-text reviews from sources like School Library Journal and Booklist are available for many titles.


Gale Cengage E-Resources

Available in-library and at home (with a valid library ID). Gale Cengage e-resources are brought to you by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport through the Southern Ontario Library Service and Ontario Library Service-North.

 

Contains thousands of magazine, newspaper, and journal articles, plus reference resources and eBook collections. The range of databases in the Gale Collection cover the following categories:  general interest and ready reference, academic, K-12, and Gale's Subject Collections.

OverDrive (Audiobooks and EBooks)

OverDrive is available at home with a valid library card and PIN. OverDrive is brought to you by the Southern Ontario Library Service and OLS-North, through the $15 Million Investment in Public Libraries by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

OverDrive’s download service provides direct transfer of audiobooks to iPod, Zune, and virtually all MP3 players.

EBooks are available in Adobe EPUB and PDF formats, and can be read on a dedicated eBook reader like the Sony Reader, Kobo, or Nook, and on most computers.

Ancestry Library Edition provides unprecedented access to family history via documents that record the lineage of over 5 billion individuals. The collection contains about 4000 databases, including records from  the United States, and parts of Europe. Content includes: census records including U.S., U.K., Canada, and Germany; birth, marriage, and death records for U.S. and U.K.; U.S. military records back to the 1600s; U.S. and U.K directories and members lists; Immigration, emigration, and naturalization records; court, land, and probate records ; biographies and histories, including American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) and WPA Slave Narratives; newspapers and periodicals, diaries of local communities and those that lived in them ; photos and maps, ranging from postcards and panoramas to family photos and headstones  census & voter records, to military indexes, to immigration & emigration lists.

PebbleGo

Available in-library or at home (with valid library ID). PebbleGo is brought to you by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport through the Southern Ontario Library Service and Ontario Library Service-North.

PebbleGo, the award-winning K-3 database for reading and research provided by Eduref and Capstone Publishing, features two distinct databases:  PebbleGo Animals and PebbleGo Earth and Space.  Both databases have built-in reading and research tools, and are expertly leveled for emerging readers.
